Why your launch day doesn't matter (and what does)
We analyzed over 200 product launches from the past 18 months, and the findings are clear: launch day is overrated.
The data
Products that achieved long-term success (>6 months sustained traction) had an average launch day rank of 12. Not #1. Not even top 5.
Conversely, 40% of #1 launches on any given day saw significant drop-off within 30 days.
What actually matters
1. **Post-launch follow-through** — The launches that win are the ones that keep shipping after day one
2. **Community building** — A engaged community of 100 is worth more than a viral spike of 10,000
3. **Iterative improvement** — Top products shipped an average of 3 major updates in the first 90 days
The trap
Launch day feels like a finish line. In reality, it's the starting line. Makers who treat it as the former burn out. Makers who treat it as the latter build lasting products.
